 Winter Preparation with Joliet Realtor

With the cooler months right around the corner, it is a good time to prepare your home for the weather to come. Snow, ice, and decreasing temperatures add stress to your home making some preventative maintenance a good idea. By tending to your insulation, checking for air leaks, and maintaining your furnace you can feel good about being prepared for winter. Joliet IL real estate agent Jeff Gregory has some helpful tips.

Keep That Cold Air Out

Check your home for air leaks by lighting a candle and holding it at different spots around doors and windows. New windows may be in order if many air leaks are identified. Your local hardware store will have the necessary products to seal your windows if installing new ones is not an option. To prevent drafts through the door, install weather stripping or possibly a door sweep.

Keep the Warm Air In

Make sure to inspect the insulation in the attic. If it is old, worn, or deteriorating you might be losing a significant amount of heat. Remember that heat rises. If you have a chimney, make sure to close the flue as warm air will escape from this area.  Your furnace ducts are another area to investigate. If there are leaks or inadequate conduction you may be losing heat. This can be a dangerous process as carbon monoxide can build up in furnaces so it is best to consult an expert. Have them check your furnace and heating ducts in the attic, crawl spaces, and basement as well. Remember to regularly replace your furnace filters to ensure that it runs well.

Maintaining Heat

It is a good idea to check your water heater before winter hits as well. To conserve energy consider insulating the water heater. Check with the manufacturer for recommendations. You can also insulate hot water pipes for additional savings. This can be done by putting foam sleeves around them where you have access. Managing your thermostat is another important aspect of maintaining heat and can be a way to save money as well. Set the temperature in the beginning of the day, when you return home from work, and at night before you go to sleep. You can also invest in a programmable thermostat to help save money. The idea is to lower the heat when people aren’t home or are sleeping and only bring the heat up when people are home.
